Acts of the Apostles 8:5-8, 14-17 1 Peter 3:15-18 John 14:15-21

“Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope…” Clearly, these words from today's second reading presume we are hope -filled! What do you think? Do you feel hopeful?

The daily news can rob one of hope. Vulgar and demeaning language fills the airways. Violent action is applauded. The use of power and brute force is touted as the “real” world. The Earth is plundered for the sake of profit. Public servants are found to be serving themselves first!

And yet, the Scriptures presume we are hopeful. Why?

I suggest the reason for our hope can be found in the gospel. “ I will not leave you orphans…I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth… He remains with you and will be in you.“

We are not alone to combat the forces of evil and darkness. As we near the close of the Easter season, we need to hold on to the image of the empty tomb, God’s definitive answer to hate and violence. Life is stronger than death. Love is stronger than hate. It's not an even contest; God has put God's finger on the scale. On a long enough timeline, the gospel wins… Guaranteed!

Meanwhile we have our work cut out for us. As Saint Teresa of Avila reminds us, we are Christ's hands and feet now. As faithful followers of Our Lord, we can and must carry on his work in our time and place: opposing oppressive structures, including the marginalized, promoting peace and justice, giving our life, our flesh and blood to the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount.

Knowing we do not act alone and empowered by the Spirit who lives in us, we can, indeed, be filled with hope.
