Scripture Reflection, August 2, 2026, 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Isaiah 55:1-3 Romans 8:35, 37-39 Matthew 14:13-21

I love today’s readings! Each one contains a powerful message of reassurance and, collectively, they indicate God’s providential love and care for each and every one of us.

St. Paul’s passage from Romans 8, for example, is one of the most powerful passages in all of sacred scripture:

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life,

nor angels, nor principalities,

nor present things, nor future things,

nor powers, nor height, nor depth,

nor any other creature will be able to separate us

from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Read those words again. Read them aloud, with passion, slowly, and let them sink into your consciousness. Jesuit Father Greg Boyle, who founded HomeBoys Ministry for gang members in Los Angeles has said that it is God’s joy to love us…God delights in us! Imagine that! Not just you, not just me and you, but ALL of us. God delights in loving us. What a powerful affirmation to carry in our hearts each day!

Now take a few moments with the first reading (Isaiah 55:1-3). Isaiah also emphasizes God’s love and fidelity to his people. One of my favorite sacred songs,”Come to the Water” by John Foley, is based on this passage. We have sung it here in the parish many times. You can also find it on the YouTube Music Channel if you would like to pray with it.

Today’s gospel, from Matthew (14:13-21), chronicles a Jesus who is weary, yet shows great compassion for those who have come to hear his message and feel his healing touch. He proceeds to provide food for both their bodies and their souls. This event foreshadows the institution of the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper. Once again we are reminded that the Lord loves and cares for all humankind in ways far beyond our imagining.

No matter who you are…no matter where you are this coming week, take some special time to imagine yourself as God’s beloved - held in the arms of Jesus. Savor the love that comes directly to you from Our Lord - who is the very essence of love. God is for us - each of us - all of us. There is nothing greater than that!
