Wisdom 6:12-16 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 Matthew 25:1-13

At our baptism we are given the Christ candle and told to carry the light of Christ into the world. In today's gospel we meet ten more light bearers, the ten virgins whose ministry is to light the way for the bridegroom as he walks his new bride to his home.

To begin with they are all equipped for their task, Ah, but life is unpredictable. The groom is delayed. And now the five foolish virgins do not have enough oil to complete their task. Only the five wise virgins who thought to prepare for the unexpected are able to complete their assignment.

Recent events in my own life have reminded me how unpredictable life can be. You may have had a similar experience. An unexpected trip to the emergency department or a medical test result, a stroke, an automobile accident… so many surprises life may hold for us, and then the things we were "gonna do "can't get done.

Still we have been baptized, charged to carry the light of Christ, the joy of the gospel, into the world. Today's gospel might be an excellent reminder for us. Like the wise virgins, we need to prepare for the unpredictability of life.

If you have been awed by the beauty of creation and the change of seasons, thank God today. If you have felt your heart swell with pride seeing the wonderful adults your children have become, tell them today. When you read the parish bulletin and feel inspired by the ministries of outreach… the homelessness prevention ministry, the cookie ministry, the school tutoring ministries, the Saint Bernard hot meal program… get involved today. When your heart is touched by the kindness and generosity of your friends, family and even strangers, affirm those good people today.

Life is unpredictable but our baptismal call remains. Share the light of Christ today, while you still have oil in your lamp.
