[Note: You may have read this story of mine in a scripture reflection I wrote several years ago; but it bears repeating, in a somewhat different form.]

When our daughter, Laura (now 42 years old), was a baby, I had a favorite lullaby that I would sing to her as I held her. I made a point to sing this particular song when she was agitated or having trouble going to sleep. I would sing, “The Cry of the Poor” by John Foley, S.J. I have loved this hymn from the first time I heard it, years before Laura was born; and the soothing melody and refrain seemed to comfort her. Moreover, the message contained in the lyrics is a poignant reminder of the love God has for all of creation. With each repetition it motivates me to consider the plight of the poor, the dispossessed, and the immigrant, fleeing violence in her/his own country.

All of my life I have loved music. In fact, I have learned to use music, both sacred music and secular, to help me pray. I often meditate on a song’s lyrics and allow the melody and the pace of the music to speak to my soul.

Cry of the Poor” is based on Psalm 34, which has been chosen for today’s liturgy because it captures the message and the intent of today’s readings. As you reflect upon each of the readings today, listen for the ways that the Lord “lifts up” supports and loves those who come to God with humility, honesty and prayerfulness…those who possess deep and sincere love in their hearts.

And, if you only have time to read one passage from scripture this week, read (and re-read) today’s Responsorial Psalm. I believe it captures the essence of what the Holy Spirit wants to communicate to us…and does so in a very powerful way.

For Reflection: In what way(s) am I poor and in need of God’s mercy and love? Who are the poor with whom I come into contact these days; in person, through other people, or via the media? What am I being asked by God to do for them?
