Today's scriptures do indeed reflect the theme of the function and the spirit of family. In the first reading, we read of the call to respect our elders - especially our parents. In the gospel passage we see Joseph, taking responsibility for the safety of the family in what is indeed a perilous time for them. He does so, based on strong intuitions he receives in dreams - two of them!

Dreams are amazing things. There are myriad psychological studies that have been conducted on dreams over the years - looking at them from many aspects. The conclusions are varied and fascinating, and sometimes seem to contradict one another. However, there is one thing that all psychiatrists, psycho-analysts and psychologists seem to agree on: Dreams are important! Even spiritual directors are offered courses to assist them in considering the significance of dreams for the spiritual life. In one way or another, dreams often include clues to the state of mind of every individual.

As a responsible, intelligent adult, Joseph knows that dreams are a key indicator, along with other criteria, for making good decisions. It appears that he has based his decisions on where to take his family - and when to take them - upon that feeling he has in his gut, that they will only be safe if he is careful and wise about how he should proceed.

Reading a commentary on Joseph recently, I was struck by the realization that he was the first person to actually save the life of Jesus. Scripture does not indicate how many times Jesus' life was seriously threatened before his actually death and resurrection. However, I think it is both remarkable and beautiful that Mary said yes to giving birth to Jesus, with all that it entailed, and Joseph said yes to protecting her (and her son), in her ministry as the Mother of God, by doing whatever was necessary to assure the care and safety of this beautiful and holy family. As parents, they gave their all, and Jesus loved them divinely.

What a wonderful family love story!
